Global Minds Doctoral Scholarships Programme at KU Leuven are open now. As one of its contributions to development cooperation, every academic year KU Leuven chooses extraordinary students from developing countries as scholarship applicants to get their PhD from the largest university of Belgium. The Global Minds Programme is led by IRO, the university’s Interfaculty Council for Development Cooperation.

The aim is to give students the opportunity to conduct PhD research in a ‘sandwich’ system, which means that 50% of the research takes place at KU Leuven and 50% at the home institution of the researcher, helped by a local co-promoter. The PhD degree is presented by KU Leuven.

Eligibility Criteria of Global Minds Doctoral Scholarships Programme at KU Leuven
  • The candidate must be a resident of one of the countries included in the scholarship country list.
  • Applicants who have nationality of the EU will not be selected. The same applies to candidates with a long-term EU residence authorization.
  • The candidate’s latest Master’s degree must have been awarded no more than ten years ago, so not before 2014.
  • The applicant must have been awarded an academic grade equal to High Distinction or higher. Degrees obtained with a final score equal to second class second/lower division will not be taken into contemplation.
  • The research project must be of outstanding academic quality, with a special focus on the development consequence of the proposal.


Application Procedure

The application procedure involves two steps:

  1. First of all, the candidate should get admission to a doctoral or predoctoral program. Applications from applicants who have started the application process for admission to a doctoral or predoctoral programme too late may not be calculated in time – so please start this procedure as soon as possible (2.5 months before the deadline). 
  2. Only once this admission has been acquired, can the applicant apply for a Global Minds PhD scholarship.

The last date of scholarship is 22 Feb 2024 (annual).
